What a Stormwater Pit Does
A stormwater pit is a drainage fitting set into the ground that collects surface water through a grate and feeds it into the property's stormwater pipes. The grate is the slotted cover that lets water in and keeps debris out. The pit takes in water off roofs, paving and gardens. Hard surfaces shed that run-off when rain can't soak in. That water joins the property's stormwater drainage, the pipe network that carries it off the site. The property's drains often run to the council street gutter, which feeds the wider stormwater network Sydney Water manages. Plumbers also call a stormwater pit a drainage pit.
Stormwater Pit Jobs We Do Across Sydney
Residential stormwater pit installation and repair covers five stormwater pit and grate jobs for Sydney homes: re-grating, cleaning, raising, installing a new pit and repairing a broken one:
Choosing a Pit and Grate
A plastic pit will crack under a driveway, and a light grate fails where cars run. We match every drainage pit and grate to the surface and the flow:
-
Driveway and Path Grates
A grate's load rating is the wheel load a grate is made to carry. ACO's nominal wheel loads run 330 kg, 2,670 kg and 5,000 kg across its grated pit range. Pit grates are made for anything from foot traffic to vehicle loads, across driveways, parking areas, paths and gardens.
-
Plastic or Concrete Pits
Light-duty plastic pits suit gardens and pathways. Polymer concrete is a concrete made to resist chemicals and acids, for harsher ground. Precast concrete pits carry heavier loads. A driveway needs a concrete pit and a heavier grate.
-
Pit or Channel Drain
Choose point drainage or a linear run to match the shape of the ground. A pit suits paving laid with falls to one point, or spots where run-off concentrates. A channel drain suits a threshold or a driveway's low edge that water tracks along. Our channel drain installation page covers that linear run in full.
Our Process
Every stormwater pit job runs in five steps, from the camera check to the grate:
-
Camera check
We send the CCTV drain camera along any existing line the pit job joins or drains into, before any quote, so the work aims at the real fault. -
Written quote
Every job gets its price in writing before the work begins. -
The base
We excavate the hole and prepare a firm, well-compacted base. Sand or gravel bedding goes in at least 80 mm deep on earth, or 150 mm on rock. -
Pit and pipes
We set the pit level and match the upstream and downstream pipe levels to the design. A knockout is a thin wall panel broken out to take a pipe. Each of the four walls of a modular pit has one. We mark the knockout to the pipe size and break it out gently, never oversized. The stormwater pipe is cut flush with the inside wall and the joint sealed. -
Backfill and grate
Backfill uses the same material as the pipeline, placed and compacted evenly, and the grate goes on.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Size Stormwater Pit Does a Sydney Home Need?
Stormwater pits run from 300 mm by 300 mm, ACO's smallest polymer concrete pit, to 1,500 x 1,500 mm, Civilcast's largest precast pit. Humes modular precast pits span 450 mm square to 1,200 millimetres square, for pipes up to DN (diameter nominal) 900. Depth and the pipe levels the design needs finish the choice.
Which Standard Covers Stormwater Pit Installation in NSW?
AS/NZS 3500.3:2025 is the stormwater drainage standard, and it covers the stormwater drainage a pit belongs to. The full title is Plumbing and drainage Part 3: Stormwater drainage. Standards Australia confirmed the 2025 edition on 28 April 2025, in a blog listing on its own site.
Can a Stormwater Pit in Sydney Drain Into the Sewer?
No, a stormwater pit drains to the stormwater line, never the sewer. In very heavy rain, extra water gets into wastewater pipes through cracks, faulty joints, the lids of maintenance holes and stormwater pipes that run straight into the wastewater system. Sydney Water lists heavy rain among the usual causes of wastewater overflows. A pit on the stormwater line keeps that water out of the wastewater pipes. When no council gutter can be reached, an absorption trench soaks run-off into the ground.
