What Is a Channel Drain?

A channel drain is a grated channel that catches surface water along a line. A strip drain is a slim channel drain, also called a trench drain or linear drain. Water falls through the slot along the top of the channel. The water then runs below ground to a stormwater outlet or pit. The drain needs only a single-slope fall, not the four-way falls a square grate needs. The City of Sydney says drainage inspections and maintenance are a licensed plumber's work only. The underground lines a channel drain joins are covered on the stormwater drainage page.

Channel Drains We Install Across Sydney

We lay grated drains wherever hard surfaces shed rain. Sydney Water says hard surfaces in urban areas make rainwater run off faster. Go straight to the surface you're draining:

    Driveway Channel Drains

Driveway channel drains take the water that sheets across a concrete driveway before it reaches the garage or the street. Where the surface is already down, we add a grated drain for driveway drainage by cutting a line and pouring a new channel. ACO (a drain manufacturer) makes the DrainLine 100 channel, with a 100 mm internal width and a polymer concrete body that takes light vehicle traffic. ACO surrounds its trench drain with 100 mm of concrete on driveways, as its installation instruction sets out. Grates come in galvanised steel, stainless steel and plastic. A national cost guide prices surface drainage job by job. The same guide says drainage planned at build time costs a fraction of a retrofit once the surfaces are down.

    Pool Surround Drains

We lay pool strip drains around the paving so splash and rain run to the channel instead of pooling on the surround. A stainless steel strip drain suits bare feet. ACO's DrainLine 100 grates come in stainless steel Heelguard and plastic, so a heel guard grate can match the paving. The work covers the surround only: we don't touch pool water, backwash or pool equipment. A blocked pool drain is a clearing job rather than an install.

    Patio and Door Thresholds

When paving runs flush to a door, a slot drain catches the water before it reaches the doorway. A slot drain is a channel drain with a narrow slot along the top. A tile insert grate holds tiles to match the paving, so the drain disappears into the surface. The National Construction Code (NCC) sets the levels. NCC 2022 Housing Provisions 3.3.3 sets a slab-on-ground at least 50 mm above paved or concrete areas that slope away, per the NCC 2022 drainage clauses. The finished surface falls at least 50 mm over the first metre. Those two 50 mm figures set how far below the door the paving sits. ACO's Brickslot channel suits brick or stone pavers up to 63 mm deep. Sydney Water's correct-connection diagram shows the gully trap undamaged and sitting above ground level. A gully trap is the raised outside grate where the house sewer overflows. ACO says a strip drain catches water along its whole length, before the water can pool at a doorway.

    Garage Door Drains

Stopping water at the garage door takes a garage drain set into the slab outside the door, so run-off sheets into the grate instead of under the door. A garage crossing with no drain leaves water pooling at the door after rain. Mosman Council adopted its stormwater policy on 3 December 2024. Mosman Council's stormwater policy bars pump systems for disposing of surface stormwater under any circumstances. Gravity is the only route up to the street. Mosman expects to approve on-site absorption only for driveways and single garages or carports. Our absorption trench page covers that route, with trench sizing and the engineer's report. NCC 2022 Housing Provisions 3.3.5(b) has the stormwater system designed so overflow in heavy rain can't flow back into the building. Mosman says charged systems don't drain ground surfaces, so they don't suit a channel drain.

Our Process

Laying a channel drain runs in five steps, from the drain camera to the warranty:

  1. Camera check

Where the new channel joins an existing stormwater line, the CCTV drain camera checks that line before the quote. The run is set out on a single-slope fall.
  2. Written quote

You get the written quote before any work begins, on every job.
  3. Dig and pour

ACO's DrainLine instruction has us dig for the drain plus a 100 mm concrete surround. We then pour a concrete bed 300 mm wide and 100 mm deep.
  4. Lay and connect

We lay and level the channels starting at the outlet, on a string line set to the required height. We seal joints if required. The connection runs through the 75 mm or 100 mm outlet to the stormwater pipe.
  5. Finish and warrant

ACO's instruction has the pavers or paving finish 3 mm above the grate, with the grates covered during the pour. The Lifetime Labour Warranty covers the labour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Strip Drains Work in Heavy Sydney Rain?

Yes, ACO says its strip drains are built to capture water and discharge it rapidly, even in extreme weather. Mosman Council's policy sets property drainage as a pipe system that drains driveways and paved areas. The same policy sizes gravity pipe systems for a 20-year, 5-minute storm at 206 mm an hour. One slope feeds the whole line.

How Much Does a Strip Drain Cost in Sydney?

What's The Damage (October 2026, Sydney) puts plumbers at $92 to $230 an hour, $140 typical, and larger drainage installation jobs at $800 to $1,200 an 8-hour day, GST included. Those are plumber rates, not a channel-drain price. The run's length and the grate material drive the cost. What's The Damage (October 2026) says sandstone can add $500 to $2,000 to excavation jobs in the eastern suburbs and inner west. The call-out fee is $0, and your written quote arrives before any work starts.

Are Strip Drains Hard to Clean?

No, strip drains are easy to clean: lift the grate and clear the leaves and silt. ACO says point drains clog quickly with leaves and silt, while a strip drain's spread-out catchment is slower to clog. ACO's DrainLine 100 plastic grate is a snap fit for easy cleaning. Our blocked stormwater drain page covers the clearing when a channel blocks.

Which Is Better, a Strip Drain or a Normal Drain?

The paving decides between a strip drain and a normal drain. A normal drain is a point drain: a single square grate that the paving falls to from four directions. A strip drain needs only a single-slope fall, while the point drain needs four-way falls. ACO makes its grated pits for an existing pavement finished with undulating falls for point drainage, so the pit suits better there. Our grated pit page covers pit depth, grates and sizing.

Can a Channel Drain Go Into the Sewer in Sydney?

No, surface water goes to the stormwater system, never the sewer. Roof downpipes go there too. Stormwater pipes plumbed straight into the wastewater system let extra water in. Heavy rain is one common cause of wastewater overflows.
