Why Regular Drain Maintenance Matters
A drain that blocks over and over hands you an unplanned bill every time. Preventative drain cleaning on a schedule can reduce those emergency clears and keeps the line flowing. Sydney Water says a plumber can put a regular maintenance plan in place for problem trees, so the roots are cleaned out before they block the pipe. The City of Sydney advises that drainage inspections and maintenance are a job for a licensed plumber only. Our licensed plumbers and drainers do the work on this page. Raw sewage carries harmful bacteria and can make people very sick, the City of Sydney warns. Sydney Water adds that clogged pipes can send wastewater back up into homes, yards and local waterways. The fix for both is a licensed plumber who clears and maintains the line. A planned drain maintenance visit lets you maintain the line and cut the chance of a blockage, instead of reacting to one. Our blocked drains page covers what blocks a drain in the first place and how we clear each blockage.

How Do You Know Your Drains Need Attention?
The signs a drain needs attention are slow emptying, gurgling, lingering smells and overflows. The City of Sydney lists six more:
- A sink overflowing.
- Waste coming up from an inspection chamber.
- A toilet that empties very slowly.
- A foul smell that lingers.
- Dirty water or sewage coming up on the land.
- Water escaping and washing away soil.
An inspection chamber is the sewer access point waste can back up from. Sydney Water adds four more:
- Sinks, a bath or a toilet emptying slowly.
- A toilet that no longer flushes properly, or has overflowed.
- Gurgling sounds from a toilet or floor drain.
- Wastewater overflowing at the gully or drain near the outside tap.
An overflow gully is the grated drain you'll find near the outside tap, where wastewater overflows. Repeated blockings may point to damaged pipes needing repair, the City of Sydney says. The City's own page on drainage problems lists its warnings in full. Our signs blog covers how urgent a blockage is.
What Drain Maintenance Prevents
Household waste can block wastewater pipes when it is flushed down the toilet or poured into the sink, according to Sydney Water. A maintenance plan targets the three build-ups below:
-
Tree Roots
Tree roots get into wastewater pipes through small cracks, seeking nutrients. Sydney Water says the roots keep growing, fill space in the pipe and slow the drainage until the pipe blocks. Check a sewer service diagram, Sydney Water's plan showing your sewer pipes, at Sydney Water Tap in before planting. Keep trees 6 metres from wastewater pipes. Our tree root removal page covers cutting the roots out and repairing the cracked pipe.
-
Grease and Fat Build-Up
Pouring fats, oils and grease down the sink sends them into the wastewater pipes, where they cool and harden. The hardened grease can combine with unflushable toilet waste to form a fatberg, which is hardened grease mixed with unflushable waste in pipes. Sink strainers keep food waste out of the pipes. Some councils run FOGO (food organics and garden organics) collections for food scraps instead.
-
Wipes and Foreign Objects
The 3 Ps go down the toilet: pee, poo and toilet paper, along with products that meet the Flushable Products Standard, AS/NZS 5328:2022. Non-flushable wet wipes and other non-flushable products belong in the bin. Sydney Water's page on wastewater blockages lists what else blocks its wastewater system.
Our Process
A drain maintenance visit runs in four steps, starting with the written quote:
-
The written quote
The written quote reaches you before we start any work, on every job. -
Camera check
We run the CCTV drain camera before any cleaning starts. The inspection shows what is actually building up. -
Clean the line
We clean the line with the jet blaster, which is a high-pressure water jetter, or with the electric eel. Our electric eel, a motorised cable, cuts through the blockage. -
The plan
We report what the camera found and schedule the next visit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much to have someone clean your drains in Sydney?
Sydney prices for a standard drain clear run $170 to $575 including GST, per What's The Damage's October 2026 guide. What's The Damage lists camera and jetting work on a stubborn blockage at $400 to $1,275 including GST, October 2026. The guide has no drain-maintenance line, so those Sydney bands are blocked drain bands, never a plan price. A written quote before any work confirms each job.
How often should drains be cleaned?
How often drains need cleaning depends on tree roots, grease, stormwater leaf load and the pipe material. Tree root intrusion is extremely common in the older clay pipes of Sydney's established suburbs, so older homes need cleaning more often. A CCTV drain inspection shows what is actually building up and sets the interval.
What does a drain maintenance plan include?
Drain maintenance visits cover scheduled drain jetting, CCTV drain inspections and stormwater and yard checks, with the timing set by what the camera finds. The visits suit homes, strata and businesses, including homes with problem trees that need roots cleaned on a schedule.
Does drain maintenance legally require a plumber or drainer?
Yes, NSW law requires a licence or certificate for work that counts as plumbing or draining, whatever the cost. Building Commission NSW defines draining as sanitary drainage, which includes flushing or cleansing any sanitary drain that connects with a sewer. The City's advice also makes drainage inspections and maintenance a job for a licensed plumber only.
Is preventative maintenance cheaper than an after-hours call-out?
Nobody can say for certain, because no Sydney guide sets a price for a maintenance plan. We quote each maintenance visit in writing, and the quote comes before any work. The camera checks the line first, so a planned visit targets the real build-up. Emergency clearing is quoted in writing too, and our emergency page covers after-hours response.
How do I book a drain maintenance plan in Sydney?
Booking a drain maintenance plan takes one call to (02) 9158 3577. A real person is on the line 24 hours a day, and the $0 call-out fee applies to the visit.
