What an Overflowing Drain Is Telling You
A drain overflow usually means a blockage somewhere down the line. Sydney Water lists four signs of blocked drains. A sink, bath or toilet empties slowly. A toilet won't flush properly or has overflowed. Gurgling from a toilet or floor drain belongs on that list too, and our gurgling drains page takes it further. Wastewater spills from the drain or gully beside the outside tap. Our blog on spotting a blocked drain expands the list. Sydney Water tells owners to call a licensed plumber for blockages in private pipes. NSW gives draining its own licence category: the flushing or cleansing of sanitary drains that connect with a sewer. The clearing work belongs with our licensed plumbers and drainers. An overflowing drain is one of the blocked drains Sydney homes run into, and our camera finds its cause before we clear anything.
What Makes a Drain Overflow
The usual causes of an overflowing drain are fats, oils and grease poured down sinks, unflushables in toilets, tree roots, and stormwater overwhelming the wastewater network in heavy rain. The 3 Ps are the rule for toilets: pee, poo and toilet paper are the only flushes, plus products that meet AS/NZS 5328, the flushable products standard. Wet wipes sit outside that list and count as a common unflushable item. A partial blockage can let the drain overflow and back up into the lowest fixture. Sydney Water advises planting new trees no closer than 6 metres to wastewater pipes. Our tree roots page covers the trees to avoid near a sewer line.
Overflowing Drains We Clear
Every overflowing drain we come across fits one of the job types below, whether the overflow is stormwater in the rain or sewer at the gully:
Rain Overflows vs Dry Weather Overflows
Sydney Water splits wastewater overflows into two main types. A dry weather overflow, also called a choke, is a blockage-driven overflow needing no rain: a partial or complete blockage reduces the pipe's capacity until wastewater backs up. A wet weather overflow happens when flow in very heavy rain exceeds the pipe's capacity. In very heavy rain, extra water enters through cracked pipes, faulty joints, around maintenance hole lids and by stormwater pipes connected straight on. A maintenance hole is the access point Sydney Water uses to clear blockages. If Sydney Water can't reach maintenance holes, wastewater can back up and flow out of grates into the street, the yard or inside the home. The split matters when a drain overflowing in rain keeps overflowing in hot dry weather too, and the owner can't tell rainwater from sewage.
Our Process
Clearing an overflowing drain runs in three steps, camera first:
-
Camera check
We inspect with the CCTV drain camera before clearing anything, so the fix targets the real cause instead of a guess. -
The written quote
We write the price down before any work begins, on every job. You never pay to clear a drain without knowing the cause or the cost. -
The clear
We inspect and jet, or run the eel, depending on what the camera found. Hydro jetting suits grease, silt and roots along the pipe wall. The electric eel, the drain machine, bores through a solid blockage. Our jet blaster and electric eel handle the block-and-clear work the picture calls for.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Does It Cost to Clear an Overflowing Drain in Sydney?
What's The Damage's October 2026 Sydney guide puts a standard drain clear at $170 to $575 with an electric eel. What's The Damage also puts camera plus jetting for a stubborn blockage at $400 to $1,275, GST included, in the same October 2026 guide. The camera inspection and what it finds set the band. The written quote confirms the price before any work starts.
Why Does My Outside Drain Overflow Only When It Rains?
Rain is the trigger: the pipe or pit can't take the flow. Very heavy rain pushes extra water in through cracked pipes, faulty joints, maintenance hole lids and stormwater pipes connected straight into the system. Heavy rain is a frequent cause of wastewater overflows. Leaves and debris held against the grill slow the grate further.
Should I Try to Unblock an Overflowing Drain Myself?
DIY stops at lifting the grill and clearing leaves on a drain you know is stormwater. Don't lift the lid or pour test water in when the overflow might be wastewater. A licensed plumber takes over at wastewater in the gully or a blockage below the grate. The how to unblock outside drain guide marks the DIY limit, from the grill down to a deeper blockage.
Is an Overflowing Drain a Health Risk?
Yes, wastewater from an overflowing sewer drain is a health risk. Sydney Water says wastewater carries bacteria, viruses and protozoa, which can cause gastroenteritis through direct contact. Keep children and pets away and stay clear until a licensed plumber clears the blockage.
Who Is Responsible for an Overflowing Drain in Sydney?
The property owner answers for the wastewater pipes up to the connection point, where the private pipes join Sydney Water's network, and calls a licensed plumber there. The blockage probably lies in Sydney Water's pipes when the overflow shows beyond the boundary or neighbours have the same problem. Widespread local flooding points the same way. So does an overflow that runs with no water in use. The blockage probably lies in the private pipes when neighbours are fine, the drainage isn't shared, no local flooding shows, and the overflow comes only while water is in use. Sydney Water's faults line, 13 20 90, answers 24/7 and sends a crew out. A customer can claim reasonable out-of-pocket expenses after paying a licensed plumber for a blockage in Sydney Water's pipes. Claims take up to 8 weeks. Sydney Water's wastewater blockages page sets out the signs that point to its pipes and the faults line for reporting them.
